After the second World War, Salcombe Ladies Hockey Club, received permission from Mr. Weymouth of Motherhill farm to play their matches until they managed to finish their own ground. In the mid 1950’s, they moved up to Malborough where they continued their matches until there was a shortage of players.

In 1967 a few veteran players met and realised there were club funds left and hoped this would encourage a fresh start. At the same time a former player, Mrs. Annie Turner and her family returned to Salcombe and along with her role as councilor and her friends were able to acquire donations and raised funds. Mrs. Turner became the founder - Chairman.

In the first few years the secretary managed to arrange away matches and for the home games obtained permission from the Kingsbridge Club to play on their pitch. However in time the Salcombe Council gave the club permission to play on the Berry but problems developed with the conflicts with the local football club.

Mrs. Carr, an elder of the town and a former president of the club heard we were having problems with this venue and said the club could use the plot she had on the opposite side of the Berry at the corner of St., Dunstans Road and Kingsale Road.

The Chairman, Shirley Valentine worked with all the other ladies for nearly eight years raising funds and getting their hands dirty to develop the ground into a pitch and build the clubhouse, this became ready in 1975. Play continued at Kingsale Road for many years with players coming and going and numbers going up and down.

In 2005, the club celebrated 60 years of Salcombe Ladies Hockey Club. Over the last few years there had been a great progression in the game and a change of surface, it was time for another change. Kingsbridge Community College had started the construction of an ‘All Weather’ pitch and the club forged links with the College. Most teams were playing on this surface and the club felt the pressure to move. In April 2006, the club made it's biggest change yet by changing their name to Kingsbridge & Salcombe Hockey Club to incorporate all ages and both ladies and men. Now the club is working closely with KCC are looking at the development of hockey from Primary School, to College and through to club level.

Throughout the 61 years there has always been a great trend of dedicated and enthusiastic ladies giving their time to manage the club. Now looking to the future this trend has not changed with the President Lulu Read, Captain Claire Jones and Committee members the club is looking forward to another 60 years!

After eight years of hard work and fund-raising functions Salcombe Ladies Hockey Club are now looking forward to playing the first match on their new pitch.
The club have been going for eight years and until now played all their home games on the Kingsbridge School pitch at Belle Hill. But now the £8000 pavilion and the £2000 pitch are almost complete and the club hope to be playing their first match on the new pitch at St. Dunstans Road soon after Christmas.
Members of the club have worked hard to get the pitch ready and they have done all the decorating of the clubroom themselves. Unfortunately the wet weather has delayed the laying of the remaining turf and the completion of the pitch has been held up.
A series of coffee mornings, fetes have raised the money needed to build the pitch and facilities along with a grant from the sports council and an anonymous donation helped the club considerably.
The three story pavilion which house a clubroom and kitchen, changing rooms and showers and cellar, has taken none months to build and is now complete except for a few extras. Now they are just a few weeks away from getting their own pitch for the first time.

The Club’s History

On Monday 3rd December 2007 the Clubhouse was sold and the land was leased to the Salcombe Rugby Football Club for their Juniors. It took along time for the committee to decide what to do with their ground in Salcombe. It was unanimous that it should be made available for locals and for sport. We felt we have achieved this.
