Eight-goal debut for K&S girls as they make the step up

27th September 2008

K&S 8 - Launceston 0

K&S were feeling a little nervous before the game began as they made their debut in a new, more competitive league. But they stated well and never looked back.

Good moves down the wing between Sarah Budgen, Karen Drews and Lulu Read led to the first goal after a few minutes with Budgen placing the ball past the goalkeeper. Feeling this could have been a fluke, K&S stood firm and made some good tackles in mid-field to keep Launceston in their own half.

Continued pressure from the forward line caused the away team to make defensive errors, and outstanding play by Katy Howell took advantage of this as she scored her first goal of the season.

A great cross by Read found Alison Lees ready to receive and collect to score the third before half-time. Good defending after the break by Claire Hallett, Claire Jones and Fi Wadey meant Launceston could not penetrate the 25-yard area.

K&S have had to adjust to a new system with enough players on the bench, which meant rolling subs could be used. It worked well with Sarah Cullen, Gemma Harvey and Lees giving fresh legs as and when needed. On one of there occasions Lees was again in the right place to score her second.

As the game continued the goals came in quick succession with another taken by Budgen and a great strike by Drews.

Launceston has a chance near the end, after a mistake made in defence allowed their striker to be one-on-one with keeper Gen Conquest, who wanted to keep a clean sheet and cleared away the danger.

With time running out K&S got two more goals when Kelly White was twice rewarded for her battling play throughout the game.

K&S win the first round of the Devon Trophy

18th October 2008

K&S 6 - Exe VI 1

On another unusually warm October day, K&S started their campaign to win the Devon Trophy. They drew a home fixture against Exe 4.
K&S were apprehensive about this match against a huge domineering club and this showed from the start of the game. Everyone was very quiet and had to defend strongly to prevent Exe from capitalising on K&S's slow start. The team stuck in with great challenges by Chloe Harvey and soon the ball was brought into the D for a short corner to be awarded. A push out by Claire Jones and an excellent strike by Karen Drews saw the ball sneak through the goal keepers legs.
Exe were the strongest team that K&S have played this season and they passed the ball around to attack but were unable to get the ball passed defenders Claire Hallett and Jones.
Another attack by K&S created another short corner attempt, which was again struck by Drews and bounced its way into a bottom corner.
With half time looming, Exe pushed forward again and after a lot of fumbling in the D and saves by Gen Conquest it was unlucky when the ball bounced off her knee, from inside her pads and into the goal.
The second half saw K&S gain confidence but they still had lost their voices. New players Laura Freer and Katie Rossiter performed well linking up with Alison Lees down the left wing. Lulu Read kept the right wing strong, linking play with Drews.
With Sarah Budgen playing a more defensive role, it meant balls that were cleared could be attacked upon and play brought forward again, straight to the Exe defence. Helen Symons picked up the ball at the top of the D and drove forward to push it into the goal to score her first goal of the season. This was then added to after Read lifted the ball across the goal for Symons to volley in.
Exe continued to clear but the ball was collected by the defence and another attack created, this gave Budgen the opportunity to score.
With the game won K&S continued the pressure and Symons ended her brilliant match performance, with a cross for Kelly White to push into the goal, just on the final whistle.
K&S now wait for the draw for the next round. Thanks to Stuart for umpiring.

Ladies Presentation Evening

At the end of the 2007-08 season the ladies presentation evening was held at The Meeting Room, Kingsbridge. This was to celebrate the excellent performance of the whole team after winning the league for another season. It was also an opportunity to award trophies to some of the team. This year the evening was not entirely dominated by the Hallett’s, although Claire Hallett was awarded Players Player. The Supporter of the Year was given to Mikey Dennis for his dedication to the club over the past year and the Clubs Person was awarded to Becky Darke. The Most Improved Player was Fi Wadey and the presentations ended with Katy Howell being selected the Captains Player by Claire Jones. Thanks was also given to the great dedication that Lulu Read gives to the club with her coaching and thanks to the umpires Stuart Read. The evening was very successful and ended a great season for all the players.

K&S keep up the winning streak

11th October 2008

K&S 6 - Cambourne SOM 1

On a warm autumn Saturday, K&S hosted Cambourne School of Minds at home. The opposition was a university side and K&S were hoping that their experience would win through.

Both teams started strongly but soon K&S started to control the play around a young experienced side. After a great attack, K&S was awarded a short corner, which was pushed out by Claire Jones and struck by Nicole Winstanley to score. Cambourne passed the ball well but were unable to get passed the defence. Winstanley attacked forward again and when within the D hit the ball into the goal to score her second.

After stern team talks from both Captains the teams came out strongly. Cambourne capatilised on a ball that was dangerous struck at a K&S player high but the umpires allowed play to continue and Cambourne scored.

This only made K&S stronger and they played well as a team. This showed when a cross by Lulu Read found Sarah Budgen, for her to sweep into the goal. This was closely followed by three further goals for K&S.

Steep learning curve in new league

25th October 2008

Bodmin 4 - K&S 0

K&S travelled to Bodmin for their fourth league game of the season and knew this was going to be a hard game.
Bodmin had the first pushback and attacked from the whistle. Unfortunately after the first few minutes Karen Drews slipped and turned over her ankle, she was unable to continue. K&S had to quickly restructure the team's positions and many players had to play out of position.
The defence of Claire Hallett, Fi Wadey and Claire Jones had to work hard the whole game to prevent Bodmin's attacks. Sarah Budgen and Sarah Cullen supported the defensive line up to clear the ball and attack into Bodmin's half. The ball was driven forward by Nicola Winstanley into the D for a shortcorner to be awarded. This was defended well and K&S were unable to capitalise from this opportunity.
Bodmin continued to attack and pressurise, Gen Conquest was the 'Lady' of the Match due to the number of amazing saves she made throughout the match. Dives, reaches and runs prevented the score line from being larger. However, Bodmin was given a short corner, which K&S were unfortunate not to clear, with the ball being passed within the D and finally slotted into the goal.
After stern words from the captain at half time, K&S knew they needed to up their game to score and draw the game but the defence still found it difficult to link to the forwards. The wings of Alison Lees, Ella Baldwin and Kelly White were marked out of the game by the Bodmin players.
The defence fought hard but a quick pass from Bodmin was placed into the goal. Budgen tried to push the play forward to bring the forwards into play. This enabled Winstanley and Helen Symons to attack the D but every attempt was quickly cleared.
With a further two goals by Bodmin gave the final score of 4-0. But this was not a true reflection of the game with the amount of great play by the defence and the goalkeeper Gen Conquest. K&S are looking forward to the home fixture in February 2009.

Seven up keep girls in touch

8th November 2008

Caradon 0 - K&S 7

The storm clouds were brewing as K&S headed for their away match against Caradon. After the loss in their last match, the team were all out to prove that this was a one off.
The storm broke and K&S did not let the wind and rain dampen their spirits. Caradon had the first push back but K&S won the ball quickly and attacked. This was to be a match all about forward play but it took a while before Nicola Winstanley was able to open the scoring by striking the ball past the keeper.
Caradon had very little attacking play but defended strongly. They were awarded with a shortcorner but it was easily cleared by the defence of Claire Hallett and Karen Drews. It was Katy Howell's first match of the season and she opened her scoring after picking up a rebound and hitting it past the keeper. Howells was unlucky to score her second in the first half after an excellently struck shortcorner, but it failed to hit the back board and was disallowed.
Although unable to play, Lulu Read travelled with the team and supported the team with her coaching from the sideline.
K&S continued to pressurise the Caradon defence, Claire Jones created plays with her strong hits from the back. Strong attacking in the D by Kelly White and Sarah Cullen placed the ball close to the goal for Winstanley to sneak it past the keeper for her second.
The rain continued to pour and K&S were about to open the flood gates to produce more goals. Early on in the second half Sarah Budgen collected the ball at the half way, took it forward and passed it through for Winstanley to score her hat trick. The halves of Gemma and Chloe Harvey kept the ball in Caradon's half with their strong tackles. New player Verity Warnecke had an excellent match on the wing and constantly crossed the ball across the D. Howells connected with two of these crosses to score her hat trick.
It was unlucky that Jones did not get onto the score sheet after her push out from a short corner, the ball was lifted across the goal and she volleyed it in. It was deemed dangerous and disallowed by the umpire; the dream did not come true!
Caradon did not give up and close to the end attacked but Gen Conquest was still prepared and toed the ball away. To conclude the great team performance, Katy Howell was able to score her fourth as she slotted the ball past the keeper.

After a long drive to St. Austell and with the raining pouring, K&S were apprehensive about there first away game fixture. It was a tentative start by both teams with play moving between both goals. K&S were awarded many short corners in the first half but none of these were capatalised on. But before the half closed K&S managed to sneak the ball passed the keeper.

St. Austell came out strong in the second half and the defence of Claire Hallett and Fi Wadey prevented the opposition from getting in a shot. Soon K&S attacked forward again and from an excellent cross from the right by Lulu Read, Sarah Budgen slotted the ball into the goal. St. Austell continued to fight and struck lucky after a fumble, for the ball to cross the line.

K&S keep up the winning streak

15th November 2008

K&S 2 - Newton Abbot 2

Newton Abbot started strongly against a panicky K&S side. The away team moved the ball well and drove the ball forward with their hard hitting and stopping. The defence of Karen Drews and Fi Wadey fought hard to clear the ball towards the halves of Nicola Winstanley and Sarah Cullen.
Newton won a short corner which they drove into the corner for K&S to be one goal down. K&S were unable to settle into their own game but the midfield kept fighting with Claire Jones and Sarah Budgen continuing to drive the ball forward for the front to collect. K&S won a short corner but were unable to capitalise.
Newton continued to pressurise and although Cullen was having a very strong match she was very unfortunate to help the away team to score their second.
The half time talk was stern and everyone new they had to play better as a team. With players reorganised K&S stuck in from the whistle. Katy Howell collected the ball at the 25 yard line and pushed the ball into the D for Gemma Harvey to connect and push passed the keeper into the goal.
A settled K&S side started to move the ball with Helen Symons, Alison Lees and Kelly White linking well. Even when Newton drove forward, Jones collected and pushed the play up the right wing to open up opportunities for the forwards. The ball moved up the right wing by Verity Warnecke and was crossed into the D, after tackles within the D; Harvey scored her second to draw the game.
With only minutes on the clock left both teams were determined to score to win the game. Newton were given a short corner which Budgen defended strongly and cleared it from the D. Again Gen Conquest showed how valuable she is to the team by making excellent saves and tipping the ball away from the goal. With a final burst from K&S and a short corner attempt the game still ended in a draw.
