Ladies Presentation Evening

At the end of the 2006-07 season the ladies presentation evening was held at The Meeting Room, Kingsbridge. This was to celebrate the excellent performance of the whole team after winning the league for another season. It was also an opportunity to award trophies to some of the team. It was the Hallet’s evening with Val Hallet winning the supporter of the year, Claire Hallet winning most improved player and captains player. The junior player of the year was Becky Darke and the clubs player was Sarah Budgen. Thanks was also given to the great dedication that Lulu Read gives to the club with her coaching and thanks to the umpires Stuart Read and Mark Lidstone. The evening was very successful and ended a great season for all the players.

Kingsbridge and Salcombe played in the first round of the Devon trophy at the weekend and with a higher standard of hockey to play k/s were ready for a tough match.
The first half started with both sides equal, but after 15 minutes k/s began to grow in confidence, with great passing by Sarah Budgen and Sarah Cullen throughout the game, creating free hits in threatening places, and one of these taken by newly positioned forward Lulu Reed, which was met by the precision touch of Becky Darke. With k/s off the mark more great play by Kelly White and new member to the team Katy Howell, applied pressure to the Ottery defence and a long ball crossed in by Reed was knocked in by White.
With the sound of the half time whistle approaching k/s dug deep to get one more and this led to a goal mouth frenzy as to who would get the final touch and it was Howell who claimed her first goal for the club.
The start of the second half saw Ottery tighten up their defence making it hard for Helen Symons to penetrate down the middle, but had more success playing the ball out wide. Ottery's goalkeeper, who was only 15, made some great saves and had a good game, despite the end result.
Claire Hallet played a fantastic game in defence, cutting off Ottery's only attacker, leaving goalkeeper Gen Conquest little to do, Hallet also played a role in the fourth goal, with a hit out in the away sides own 25 yard area, a precise hard hit to forward Reed, who was in the attacking 25, carried the ball into the D to go one on one with the keeper and experience showed, taking the score to 4-0
Ottery's heads began to lower but k/s were now really enjoying the game and after a number of short corners which just missed the mark, a rebound from one found Reed who flicked past the keeper.
This was a great result for k/s and they now go on to play in the next round against Dart on a date to be arranged. A special thank you goes to Mikey Dennis who traveled to umpire the game.

Good team win for K&S girls

25th November 2007

Early in the first half K & S applied the pressure to the visitors defence and were rewarded with a goal when, from a great ball in by Sarah Budgen, Alison Lees finally got passed the keeper.
They continued to dictate this league game with some great passing between Becky Darke, Katy Howell and Sarah Budgen, and this soon led to another goal scored by Kate Treleaven. With only 15 minutes played Kelly White and Lulu Read had to be substituted due to leg injuries, but K&S adjusted with ease and continued to play well.
The Uni kept trying to break through and on a few occasions put defenders Claire Hallet, Fi Wadey and Claire Jones under pressure, but with good clearing by Hallet and Jones it was comfortably absorbed. A good one-two with Darke and Lees down the wing led to Lees second goal.
In the last quarter of the first half K&S began to sit back a little and gave the Unit the chance to drive forward, which led to a lapse in concentration and a goal against.
The home side stepped it up in the second half and kept play tight while driving up the pitch to attack the Uni defence. Some great tackling and passing by Helen Symons won several short corners.
With the final whistle approaching, K&S took it up a level and a free-hit taken by Jones found Treleaven in the D to sneak in the last goal. Another great team performance means that K&S are unbeaten.

Cougars’ team spirit is good omen for the future

9th December 2007

In spite of the weekend weather, which put pay to most outdoor sport in the South West, this match went ahead.
With the previous meeting between these to teams ending 2-0 to the Cougars, it was felt Valley would be out for revenge.
The first half started with K&S applying pressure and making some early opportunities. Great runs by Karen Drews and Alison Lees created some good play, and after 10 minutes, with the D packed with defenders and attackers, Drews showed perseverance before a cheeky reverse flick beat the keeper.
The visitors continued to dominate, and hard work by Sarah Budgen made life easier for the defenders. Three of the youngest team members, Sarah Cullen and cousins Chloe and Gemma Harvey, played with great maturity in putting through good passes and committing to every tackle.
This helped to gain the second goal, when a ball played forward by Budgen found Katy Howell in the D, and she scored with a superb reverse flick.
Valley kept trying to get back into the game but found it difficult to find the final touch, and Claire Hallett controlled the defence to make sure they did not get through.
After half-time K&S continued to drive forward but Valley dug their heels in and defended well. Several short corners and crosses from Drews just could not fine the back of the net.
After 20 minutes K&S were reduced to 10 players when a high ball struck Lees on her wrist, causing it to swell instantly. The visitors covered the loss by a good team performance, which promises much for the future.

Cougars win first league match

4th November 2007

With last-minute changes to the team, and the pressure of the first league match of the season, the cougars did well to dominate the possession in the first half. This was secured with a goal set up by Sarah Budgen and scored by Alison Lees just before half-time.
In the second half, Plymouth came out the stronger but great play from the defense kept them at bay.
Special mention should go to Claire Hallet, Fi Wadey and Katy Howey, who played superbly in her first game for the Cougars.
A superb performance from Chloe Harvey and Becky Darke ensured plenty of play for the Cougars in their attacking half, which was eventually rewarded with a second goal, again set up by Budgen and scored by Helen Symons.
Plymouth came back strongly again and scored as the ball crept over the line, but good keeping from Gen Conquest kept all other strikes at bay.
Sarah Cullen played out of position in her first game for Cougars, and combined well with Gemma Harvey, who also had a great game.

Cougars measure up for a higher playing field

15th December 2007

Dart 2 - K&S 1 (Trophy Match)

Kingsbridge and Salcombe ventured into new territory when they played Totnes team for the first time in Saturday’s Devon Trophy quarter-final at Ivybridge college. They knew it was going to be a difficult game.
With a cold wind blowing, K&S took a while to settle and were put under pressure from the start. Some good play by Sarah Budgen and Karen Drews took the ball forward to enable Cougars to apply their own pressure, and Lulu Read, back from injury, sent in some good crosses.
Dart had several young players up front and they gave Fi Wadey and Claire Hallett and Claire Jones a busy game at the back, but the K&S defenders played a great game. They had several short corners to deal with, and it was a lapse in concentration that left players on the post to slot in the first goal from a corner.
This was a first for K&S, having to come back from a goal down, but they seemed to up their game and started to play their brand of hockey with some hard tackling by Becky Darke. However, she took a knock on the side of the head for her trouble, but showed great determination and continued the game without showing any fear of future tackles.
The Cougars’ hard work paid off when a cross ball by Read found Helen Symons in the D to make the score 1-1.
With great belief after the half-time interval, K&S felt they could win the game. Confidence grew, which made the team play better and thread through sine good passes, but Dart continued to drive forward and gained several more corners.
Goalkeeper Gen Conquest had her busiest game to date, and if it had not been for her superb skill the end result would have been vastly different.
The Cougars started to fade towards the end of the match and Dart went ahead again.
Kingsbridge and Salcombe fought to the end but could not get out of their own half in the last 10 minutes.

Girls’ victory well deserved

Exeter Uni 1 - K&S 4

In their first fixture since the beginning of December, K&S were anticipating a tough game, but they played an outstanding match and deserved the end result.

Several short corners in the opening minutes led to Helen Symons catching a rebound and placing it past the goalkeeper, but a few moments later she took a nasty knock to the ankle that put her out for the rest of the game.

With no substitutions, K&S continued with 10 players but did not lose momentum and continued to drive forward. After 12 minutes Katy Howell scored with a great strike.

Great one-twos down the wing by Karen Drews and Lulu Read provided some great cross-balls to the D, and at the other end, when the Uni kept trying to break, excellent defending by Fi Wadey, Claire Hallet and captain Claire Jones stopped them in their tracks.

After half-time K&S pushed Jones up from the back so it gave Sarah Budgen more freedom to move up front and continue her great play. This formation worked well and, with some enthusiastic play by Becky Darke and Gemma Harvey, more scoring opportunities came their way.

Read made a great run down the line to set Howell up for her second of the match. Legs started to tire towards the end, and a lapse in concentration gave the Exeter side a chance at goal and, despite a great first save by goalkeeper Gen Conquest, a quick home player pounced to get their own goal.

K&S were not put off by this and Read took the game out of the Uni’s grasp after Howell had battled to win the ball and feed it through into the D for Read, who needed to beat some defenders before slotting it in from an acute angle.

Lulu leads girls to the double over university

February 2008

Plymouth Uni II 0 - K&S 4

Kingsbridge & Salcombe won the early season game against the university 4-1, and it was felt that the students would be looking for revenge. A strong and icy cold wind made the teams jittery from the start and K&S found themselves under pressure, but they kept calm and dealt with the Uni attacks.

Before long K&S started to apply pressure and some good runs by Lulu Read started to panic the Uni defence. She was unlucky not to score in the first half with several shots hitting the posts.

Karen Drews put them ahead with a superbly struck short corner that was just out of reach of the goalkeeper.

In the second half K&S knew they had to step it up, and some good play by Becky Darke and Sarah Budgen gave the strength to the side to push forward and gain some vital hits. After 10 minutes young Devon player Chloe Harvey scored her first goal of the season for the club.

Despite the uni’s strong attacks the defence held their own, and the third goal came towards the end of the game following some good tackling by Gemma Harvey, who played the ball to Read, who well deserved a goal after playing a great match.

The final goal came from more good play by read, who took the ball down the line and drew the keeper before slipping it back for Kelly White to tap in.

Unconvincing display but girls still do the double

14th March 2008

Mannamead 0 - K&S 2

K&S completed a back-to-back double in Plymouth on Sunday after beating Mannamead 3-0 at home the previous weekend. But it was a far cry from the performance they gave in the first game.

The visitors took a long time to gain confidence and made the game hard for themselves, with misjudged passes and poor communication.

At times there were some good moves, with one-twos between Katy Howell and Bex Darke, but this did not seem to inspire the player into believing that they are more than capable of playing at a higher standard of hockey.

Slowly but surely K&S began to put pressure on the home defence with some great long balls played across goal by Lulu Read, but they lacked the final touch in the goal.

However, they did manage to score a great goal when the ball was brought into the D by Howell and then Gemma Harvey played a perfectly placed pass to cousin Chloe, who swept it past the keeper.

Mannamead tried to come back nut also found it difficult to get the ball through, and nearing the end of the first half K&S scored their second with a hit ay goal that was deflected in by a defender, although Howell and Gemma Harvey were there to make sure.

Unbeaten K&S win the league

7th March 2008

K&S 3 - Mannamead 0

Kingsbridge & Salcombe maintained their unbeaten run in front of a good home crowd on Sunday to win the Plymouth and District League with two games in hand. This was a game that K&S expected to win comfortably against a Mannamead team languishing at the bottom of the table.

It started slowly with Mannamead holding their own. Fifteen minutes in and K&S visibly picked up the pace. Superb play by Karen Drews on the wing began to create chances for the forwards, and eventually they took the lead through Gemma Harvey with a well placed ball just wide of the keeper.

Mannamead fought back with some good passing but strong defending by Claire Jones and Fi Wadey kept the visitors at bay.

The home side found new momentum with the change of ends and determined play by midfielders Becky Darke and Sarah Budgen kept the ball firmly in the Mannamead half. The forwards at first struggled to convert the pressure into goals but their persistence paid off and, after some desperate play in the D, Harvey hammered home a second goal off the rebound.

The K&S offensive continued, helped by some outstanding runs from Claire Hallet. Obviously under pressure, Mannamead attempted to limit the damage by packing the D with players but frantic defending led to a short corner being awarded against them. A long ball across the D found Katy Howell who ended a three game goal drought with an assured strike.

Drews was unlucky not to make it 4-0 when, after screaming the ball over the line from another short corner, the goal was disallowed as the ball was deemed not to have hit the backboard.

K&S show good character

February 2008

Tavistock 1 - K&S 6

This was the first meeting of the season between these two teams and K&S were missing key players. They found themselves under pressure straight away, and the young Tavy team were quick to get behind the defence but great goalkeeping by Gen Conquest kept the ball out.

There were moments during the first phase of the match that showed K&S were in the game, and they took the lead when a short corner, pushed in by Sarah Budgen, found Lulu Read at the top of the D, and a great strike produced her fifth goal of the season.

K&S still seemed nervous and had to pull together, but good play at the back by Fi Wadey and newly positioned Gemma Harvey dealt with the Tavy attacks. After 25 minutes Budgen gained the ball and played it through to Kate Treleaven to make it 2-0.

At half time K&S had a productive team talk about positioning and awareness, but this did not seem to sink in at first and after 10 minutes Tavy equalised, although Conquest was unfortunate not to save the goal as it just clipped a post on the way in.

The visitors finally stepped up a gear and hit straight back with a goal by Budgen from a short corner. Tavistock heads dropped and this gave K&S the opportunity to open the floodgates.

Read took the ball down the line and played it through to Budgen in the corner, and a cross into the D allowed Treleaven to get her second. Five minutes later Alison Lees was on the ball and shot against a post but made no mistake with the rebound.

They still applied great pressure through good play by Sarah Cullen and young newcomer Ella Baldwin. K&S gained a short corner at the final whistle so everyone came to the top of the D, but Karen Drews needed no help, taking a fantastic strike at goal with such power that the keeper could not keep it out.
